If you’ve been enjoying the crystal clear water of your pool, you can thank your pool filter for doing the heavy lifting when it comes to filtering out dirt and debris from the water. Cartridge filters are a popular choice of pool filter, largely thanks to their easy maintenance – just hose it off to get rid of accumulated dirt. However, there will come a time where your cartridge filter element will need replacing. Let’s take a look at some of the signs that indicate that a replacement is in order!
Frayed or ripped pleats
Your pleats of your cartridge element won’t stay in perfect condition as time goes on and this is totally normal. However, you need to keep an eye on the pleats as accumulated damage over time from the water pressure, chemicals and dirt can mean that a replacement is required. Look for pleats which are ripped, frayed or tattered.
Cracked end caps
The cartridge element comes with plastic ends which keep the material together. Check your ends caps every now and then to see if you can spot any cracks or chips. Once the end caps start to show damage, it’s best to replace it straight away to avoid part of the end cap making its way into the filter and causing damage.
Heavy staining
Your cartridge element won’t stay the same colour as when you bought it and some level of discolouration is fine. However, keep an eye out for permanent staining which looks oily or dark brown. If soaking won’t remove these oil stains, you may need to look at replacing the cartridge element as heavy oil staining can impact on the performance of the filter.
High psi
A high psi is a good indication that your cartridge filter element needs cleaning, When your cartridge element is in good condition, your psi will return to normal after cleaning. Eventually, the accumulated dirt particles simply can’t be removed by cleaning or soaking and if you’re noticing that your psi is creeping pretty quickly after cleaning, it may be telling you that the element is at the end of its life.
